There are two main types of termites ground termites (also called subterranean   termites) and wood termites. Ground termites nest in soil and wood termites nest in wooden planks and other wooden structures,

The mouthparts of termites are modified for the purpose of chewing wood, They have antennae, which can be either beadlike or threadlike,

Termites have a very soft cuticle (an outer covering), which dries up easily. This is why they live in dark, warm and damp nests,

Some termites  have protozoa (single-celled creatures) in their stomach,

These help with the difficult process of digesting cellulose (a carbohydrate  that contains glucose) present in plants and wood.
